Match-box (3 3/16 x 1 3/4 x 7/8 ins) of thin cardboard; rectangular, with slip-on lid; exterior covered with bright terra-cotta-coloured paper; on top, a paper label, printed in red and blue, "R. Bell's Improved Royal Patent Lucifers. Warranted. 22 Bread St., Cheapside, London. Draw the sand paper briskly over the match. Warranted to keep in any Climate" with the Royal Arms at top; box contains about 60 Matches (2 3/4 x 1/10 x 1/10 ins), sulphur-dipped, with heads of black sulphide of antimony, and a piece of stiff pinkish-red sanded card-board (2 1/3 x 1 1/3 ins), folded in the middle, for ignition-purposes; date probably about 1833.
