My dear Sir
This will introduce to you my friend Mr Starbuck with whom you may hereafter have to do business _
He will deliver to you the History of my fathers' safety Lamp. I had another volume which continued the newspaper controversy that was caused in at the time, but it is mislaid I have for some part been very much engaged but now I am at leisure and I intend setting down to note
[page 2]
the gradual progress of the Locomotive Engine under my father's eye.
Nicholas Wood has never replied to my letter respecting the letters I shall fire another shot with a heavier charge.
Yours faithfully,
Robt Stephenson
_ Smiles Esq

P.S. I trust you are getting fairly seated in your new position [illegible word]. I fear not a very comfortable one under existing circumstances _
I am just leaving for Paris for a little while _ Mr Starbuck will give you my address if you sh'd have occasion to drop me a line
