Mr. B & E’s Engine being constructed to carry its own Water an Fuel it has been a Subject of much discussion with Mr. Wood and myself as to the most correct and just Method of assigning to it its proper Load of Carriages and Goods as no Tender was necessary for their Engine. We have therefore taken Mr. Stephenson Engine as our datum; The Weight of Mr. Stephensons Engine with its Water in the Boiler is 85 and the Weight of the Carriages and Goods it took after it was 9t .. 10C .. 3qr .. 26 lb which being within 2 lbs

of 191Cwt we have taken the useful weight at 191Cwt.
We therefore say if of Engine 85 Cwt : 191 Cwt if usefull Effect in Mr. Stephensons Engine. Then should 61 Cwt of Mr. Braithwaits Engine take 137 if Carriages & Good Viz 191 x 61/85 = 137 for the Weight of Carriages & Goods for Mr. B’s Engine.
