Diaries

A series of personal diaries maintained by Frederick ("Fred") Rich between 1945 and 1965. The series comprises two distinct groups: a sequence of railway-centred diaries documenting Rich's education, engineering training and professional career between 1945 and 1960, and a smaller group of contemporaneous personal diaries covering his period of National Service with the Royal Air Force between 1953 and 1955 together with a further diary for 1965.

The diaries record Rich's development from schoolboy railway enthusiast to locomotive engineer, testing engineer and Work Study Assistant within British Railways. Subjects include apprenticeship training at Ashford Works and Brighton Works, locomotive construction and design, locomotive testing, railway operations, footplate experience, railway photography, technical education and later professional responsibilities within the Southern Region of British Railways. The diaries also preserve extensive accounts of railway observation, railway working practices and friendships with railwaymen during the final years of steam operation.

Throughout the series, Rich records aspects of daily life alongside his railway interests and professional activities. Entries relate to family life, personal relationships, correspondence, travel, military service, recreation and other experiences beyond the railway environment. The diaries also contain occasional loose and interleaved material retained and cross-referenced by Rich, including correspondence, draft letters, memoranda, photographs, commemorative items, newspaper cuttings and other contemporary documents associated with diary entries.

Several diaries contain retrospective annotations and reconstructed material added in later years, providing additional commentary on events, people and railway practices. Taken together, the series provides a detailed record of railway engineering, railway operations, railway culture and personal experience across two decades of social, technological and organisational change, while documenting the life and career of its creator.
