Railway Diaries

A continuous sequence of personal diaries maintained by Frederick ("Fred") Rich between January 1945 and December 1960. The diaries document his daily life, railway interests, education, engineering training and professional career, providing a detailed record of his development from schoolboy railway enthusiast to locomotive engineer, testing engineer and Work Study Assistant within British Railways.

The sequence records Rich's apprenticeship at Ashford Works and Brighton Works, subsequent employment in the Brighton and Derby Drawing Offices, work at the Rugby Locomotive Testing Station, and later technical and administrative duties within the Southern Region of British Railways. Subjects include locomotive construction, engineering design, locomotive testing, technical education, footplate experience, railway operations, modern traction, organisational management and professional development.

Throughout the diaries, Rich maintains extensive records of railway observation, photography, footplate journeys and friendships with railwaymen, preserving contemporary accounts of railway working practices and culture during the final years of steam operation. The volumes also contain occasional loose and interleaved material retained and cross-referenced by Rich, including correspondence, draft letters, memoranda, photographs, commemorative items and other contemporary documents relating to events discussed in the diary entries.

Several volumes contain retrospective annotations and reconstructed material added in later years, providing additional commentary on events, people and railway practices. Alongside engineering and railway subjects, the diaries contain references to family life, personal relationships, bereavement and other aspects of Rich's private life.

Taken together, the volumes provide a detailed and continuous record of railway engineering, railway operations and railway culture during a period of significant technological and organisational change within British Railways, while also documenting the personal and professional development of their creator.
