Some Details of Steam Locomotive Design Affecting the Footplate Man: Correspondence, Report and Illustrations (1958)

A file relating to a technical paper by Fred Rich titled Some Details of Steam Locomotive Design Affecting the Footplate Man, prepared for presentation before the Institution of Locomotive Engineers (Midland Centre) in 1958. The file comprises four letters from Harold Bayley of the Institution of Locomotive Engineers concerning the submission, presentation and possible publication of the paper, together with a handwritten manuscript of the paper and a set of ten mounted black-and-white photographic illustrations.

The paper examines locomotive design from the perspective of the footplate crew, drawing upon engineering knowledge, locomotive testing experience and operational practice. Subjects include locomotive fittings, footplate working conditions, work study methods and the practical effects of locomotive design on drivers and firemen. The manuscript includes appendices, diagrams, acknowledgements and other supporting material.

The photographic illustrations form an integral part of the paper and are presented as numbered figures within the text. They depict footplate equipment, locomotive fittings, instrumentation, coal handling arrangements and other aspects of locomotive operation and working conditions relevant to the paper's subject matter.

Taken together, the file constitutes a formal technical output produced during Rich's period at the Rugby Locomotive Testing Station and provides evidence of his early engagement with technical writing, engineering analysis and professional railway institutions.
