Personal diary covering the period January 1945 to November 1947. Records Fred Rich's school years, domestic life, Air Training Corps activities, and early employment as a junior clerk at Barclays Bank. The volume documents his developing interest in railways through railway observation, correspondence, journeys and the compilation of railway records. It also records his efforts to secure railway employment, including applications to the Southern Railway, and concludes with his acceptance as a Premium Apprentice at Ashford Works in November 1947. The diary documents the formative period immediately preceding the start of his railway engineering career.
