Footplate Journey Summary Logbook
A retrospective logbook compiled by Fred Rich containing tabulated summaries of his steam locomotive footplate journeys between 1944 and 1963. The creator-titled volume, Footplate Summary, records dates, locomotive numbers, classes, sheds, drivers, firemen, routes and mileage, together with brief notes relating to individual journeys.
Entries are arranged in tabular form and function as a reference tool rather than a contemporaneous working notebook. The volume was compiled from information recorded elsewhere in Rich's diaries and notebooks and serves as a consolidated summary of journeys described in greater detail in those records. Rich continued to revise and supplement the notebook in later years, adding cumulative mileage calculations, summaries of footplate training undertaken during his apprenticeship, analyses of the drivers with whom he travelled most frequently, tabulated summaries of locomotive classes experienced on the footplate, and a small collection of railwaymen's autographs.
Taken together, the volume provides a structured retrospective record of Rich's steam locomotive footplate experience and reflects his longstanding practice of organising, analysing and cross-referencing information drawn from across his personal records.
