A small series of engineering documents produced by Frederick ("Fred") Rich outside his diary and notebook-based record-keeping systems. The series comprises a formal report prepared for presentation before the Institution of Locomotive Engineers in 1958 and a retrospective summary of locomotive testing data compiled in 2004 from test runs undertaken at the Rugby Locomotive Testing Station between February and October 1958.
Both items relate to Rich's work at the Rugby Locomotive Testing Station and reflect his engagement with locomotive performance, footplate working practices and engineering analysis. The records combine technical observation, structured data, photographic illustration and formal presentation, illustrating different stages in the interpretation and communication of engineering information.
Taken together, the series provides evidence of Rich's professional engineering work and his continuing engagement with locomotive testing and performance analysis long after the events recorded. The documents demonstrate his longstanding commitment to the preservation, organisation and interpretation of railway engineering information.
