Personal diary covering the period November 1947 to May 1950. Records Fred Rich's transition from railway enthusiast and prospective apprentice to engineering trainee within the Southern Railway. The volume documents the commencement of his apprenticeship at Ashford Works, subsequent transfer to Brighton Works, and participation in workshop training, technical education and drawing-school exercises, including work associated with the experimental Leader locomotives at Brighton Works. It also contains entries relating to railway observation, photography, technical reading, correspondence and model railway activities, including publication of his first railway article in Model Railway News. Alongside engineering and railway subjects, the diary records aspects of Rich's personal life and reflections on family and domestic matters. The volume traces his early professional development and concludes with his establishment as a second-year apprentice at Brighton Works.
