Notebooks

A diverse series of notebooks maintained by Frederick ("Fred") Rich between 1944 and 1996 documenting his railway observation, engineering training, photographic activity, technical studies, historical research and personal record-keeping practices. The series complements the diary sequence by preserving working records, reference tools, technical notes and specialised documentation systems created alongside Rich's daily journal writing.

The largest group comprises the Railway Logbooks, a long-running series of field notebooks recording locomotive workings, haulage, shed allocations, operational observations and photographic activity between 1944 and 1959. Together with the Wellcome Photographic Diaries, these records document the development of Rich's methods of railway observation, photography and information management from his teenage years onwards.

The series also contains notebooks relating to Rich's engineering education and professional development, including apprenticeship training at Brighton Works, technical study of locomotive systems, and later work associated with locomotive testing and instrumentation. These records preserve detailed technical notes, sketches, calculations and reference material reflecting his developing engineering knowledge and practical experience.

The series also contains a retrospective compilation of steam locomotive footplate journeys between 1944 and 1963 and a late-life notebook combining railway history, preservation, personal research and contemporary observation.

Although principally concerned with railway and engineering subjects, the series also contains a small number of notebooks documenting personal interests and activities outside the railway sphere.

Taken together, the series provides a detailed record of Rich's methods of observing, documenting, analysing and interpreting the railway environment over more than fifty years. It reveals the systems through which he organised information relating to railway operations, locomotive engineering, photography, footplate experience and railway history, complementing the personal narrative preserved in the diary series.
