Railway Logbooks

A chronological group of field notebooks and working notes documenting Fred Rich's railway observation and recording activities between 1944 and 1959. The notebooks record locomotive workings, haulage, shed allocations, sectional "wants", depot visits, duty rosters and Southern Region operating patterns, together with dates, locations and related technical observations. Several volumes contain structured tables of locomotive performance, shed distribution and locomotive allocations, while others include duty lists, seasonal rosters and explanatory notes relating to railway operating practices.

Throughout the series, Rich records locomotive movements and railway activity in a systematic manner, reflecting the development of his methods of railway observation and documentation from his teenage years through to the end of the 1950s. The notebooks also incorporate aspects of his photographic workflow, including exposure records, coloured sticker systems and later annotations indicating transfer of information to his photographic negative database.

Engineering notes, calculations, sketches, diagrams and miscellaneous technical observations appear throughout, demonstrating the close relationship between Rich's railway enthusiasm, photographic activity and developing engineering knowledge. Use varies from densely completed working notebooks to lightly used pocket volumes, with crossings-out and amendments indicating information transferred into other record-keeping systems.
