Engineering Training & Technical Study Notebooks

A group of notebooks documenting Fred Rich's engineering training, technical studies and practical workshop experience during his apprenticeship and early professional railway career. Four of the notebooks function as working records of apprenticeship training undertaken within the Mechanical & Electrical Engineer's Department, Millwrights Shop and Erecting Shop at Brighton Works. These volumes frequently take the form of illustrated workshop diaries, combining daily records of work undertaken with technical sketches, measurements and explanatory notes. Subjects include locomotive repairs, workshop machinery and contemporary engineering projects, including work associated with the experimental Leader locomotives.

The group also includes specialised technical study notebooks relating to locomotive testing instrumentation at the Rugby Locomotive Testing Station and the English Electric E.M.27.L. Gas Turbine-Mechanical Locomotive. These volumes contain detailed notes on testing equipment, measurement systems, locomotive controls and operation, and appear to have been compiled as reference and study aids from technical literature, training materials and related engineering sources.

Several notebooks contain loose interleaved notes and later annotations added by Rich, including retrospective explanations of technical terminology and working practices. Although primarily concerned with engineering subjects, some volumes also contain records of railway journeys and operational observations made in the course of Rich's work and training.

Taken together, the notebooks provide a detailed record of Rich's engineering training, technical studies and practical workshop experience, documenting the methods, machinery and engineering problems encountered during his apprenticeship and early railway career.
