Late Personal Railway Notebook
A notebook titled Locomotive Notes. Book one. 1995, containing personal railway notes made by Fred Rich between April and December 1995. Entries combine contemporary observations of railway activity with retrospective recollections of events, railwaymen and experiences from the 1950s and 1960s.
The notebook is informal in character and differs from Rich's earlier Railway Logbooks, engineering notebooks and photographic records. Entries include notes derived from railway society meetings, historical research, technical publications, preservation activities and conversations with fellow railway enthusiasts, alongside personal reflections and occasional day-to-day commentary.
The volume represents a late-life return to railway subjects, combining memory, historical investigation, technical enquiry and contemporary observation in a single notebook. Although titled Book one, no subsequent volumes in the sequence are known.
Taken together, the notebook provides evidence of Rich's continuing engagement with railway history, locomotive engineering and railway preservation in later life, and complements the more systematic records preserved elsewhere in the archive.
