The archive of British mechanical engineer and inventor David Joy (1825–1903), comprising personal diaries, engineering drawings, photographs, correspondence, and printed papers documenting his professional life and inventions. Joy is credited with designing the Jenny Lind locomotive (1847) and developing a widely used form of radial valve gear (1879), fitted to locomotives, ships’ engines, and stationary steam engines worldwide. The archive also includes an outsize photograph album that forms a substantial visual record of Joy’s engineering work.
