Letter of condolence from James Forrest to the executors acting on behalf of the late David Joy

Handwritten letter of condolence from James Forrest, written on Institution of Civil Engineers headed paper which he has crossed through, indicating that he was writing in a personal rather than official capacity.

The letter is addressed to the executors acting on behalf of the late David Joy. Forrest asks that his sympathy be conveyed to Joy’s relatives, whose bereavement had been announced in The Times. He recalls first meeting Joy in the drawing office of the Railway Foundry, Leeds, in 1848, and notes that their occasional exchanges over the years were always pleasant. Forrest describes Joy as “a most ingenious man” and remarks that some of his inventions will endure as testimony to his ingenuity.
