David Joy diaries
This file contains five volumes of David Joy’s retrospectively written and illustrated manuscript diaries for the periods:
• 3 March 1825 to June 1851 (vol. 1)
• October 1851 to March 1856 (vol. 2)
• 30 June 1874 to 12 July 1882 (vol. 4)
• 22 July 1882 to September 1887 (vol. 5)
• 1887 to October 1893 (vol. 6)
The diaries contain detailed accounts of Joy’s work and personal life. Freehand sketches of contemporary locomotives and engines appear throughout.
Note: Volume 3, thought to cover the period 1856–1874, is not included in the collection and has never been acquired by the Science Museum Group.
