Sir
Wilts Somerset & Weymouth Railway
As it appears by the Plans & Sections of this Railway that it is the intention of the Company, that the Railway shall pass the Melksham Turnpike Road from Bath to London on a level, we are directed by the Trustees of that Road to inform you that in consequence of its being the High Road from London to Bath & Bristol, & of the great traffic upon the same that they consider the Railway should not be allowed to pass such Tu npike Road upon a level but that the Road should be carried over the Railway by a Bridge as provided by the Railway clauses consolidation Bill and we are also directed to inform you that if the company should apply for powers to pass the Turnpike Road upon a level according to the proposed plan without building a Bridge, that the Trustees must oppose the same.
We request you to inform us on or before the 31st instant whether the Company will agree to carry the Melksham Turnpike Road over the Railway by a Bridge according to the provisions of the Railway Clauses Bill - and in case we do not receive an answer from you by the 31st instant to that effect the Trustees will conclude that the Company declines to comply with their requisition.
We are Sir
Yours most respectfully Maule & Gore
Saunders Esq G W Railway
