Your letter of the 12th inst did not reach me till this morning in consequence of my absence from home. As regards Messrs Awdry’s letter to you I have right ..... in the following papers [struck through] passages viz “Mr Brunel agreed and Mr Player thought it ........ to give £20 to cover the preliminary expenses of the Committee". This statement has not the slightest foundation. I saw Mr Brunel on the subject but only at the House of Commons in the presence of Mr Blandford & MrTims I stated to him that the Committee felt aggreived at being subjected to very heavy expenses last year in objecting to their Road being crossed on a level; and that now they were disinclined to accommodate the Company, unless some amends were made to them in respect of the costs in question. Indeed that it appeared ...... that a fraction of these costs had been unnecessarily & vexatiously incurred; & that so far the committee had a claim - not one word was said as to ….. nor was any offer whatever made by Mr the contrary; [underlined] When he left he said he would consider the proposal, and communicate with me; from that time to the present I have neither seen nor heard anything from him or anyone else. [underlined] ·
Yours faithfully
J M Ludlow ......

PS I think perhaps that you should show my letter to Messrs Awdry and the members of the committee who have seen their letter.
