Manuscript letter from William Butler to S. Leigh-Gregson dated February 4th 1882. Butler puts forward his views on the 'practical and theoretical education of artizans'. He writes, '[i]t seems to me, that no opportunities are afforded to those who have obtained some knowledge of Science, of seeing & studying its practical application to the Mechanical Arts'. He proposes 'establishing in all our large Centres of Population, a Central Building, provided with Laboratory, Workshops etc., where the artizans might see & study the relation between theory and practical results'.
