Manuscript letter from Wm. S. Shaw, 4th February 1882, concering technical education.

Manuscript letter from Wm. S. Shaw dated February 1882. Written in response to a request for evidence that could be presented to the Royal Commission. Shaw at first states that he 'has not given the subject' of employing practical men as teachers of science 'any thought' and is unable to provide an opinion. He goes on to argue that 'no class of men are so well able to teach at any rate the theoretical parts of science as Day School teachers'. He points 'to the results of such men as, say Mr James Wright and Mr Cooper who are now employed by your committee'. He emphasises 'the importance of Government giving a little more encouragement to the Artizan Classes in the Art subjects'. He continues that '[i]f Art was as much encouraged in those examinations as Science it would have a very great and beneficial effect upon the Artistic work produced in this country'.
