A paper, 'on technical education', read before the Philosophical Society of Glasgow on 6th December, 1882, by David Sandeman and E. M. Dixon, B.Sc. '[T]he time seems to have arrived for the Society to consider how its educational functions are likely to be affected by the recent acts of Legislature'. Makes direct reference to the Royal Commission on Technical Instruction. Also makes direct reference to, and quotes, an inspection carried out by the School Board of Manchester to a school in Paris, the findings of which are in the collection [RCTI/1/1/1]. They write 'it is possible to teach the rudiments of practical workmanship to boys when at school, and so to prepare them for subsequently learning their trades better, and in a shorter time than can be done by the prevailing form of apprenticeship' (p.7).
