Manuscript letter from James Wright to S. Leigh-Gregson, 4th February 1882, concerning technical education.
Manuscript letter from James Wright to S. Leigh-Gregson, Esq., Aigburth Road, Liverpool, dated 4th February 1882. Written in response to a request for opinions 'as to the importance of men possessed with practical as well as theoretical knowledge being employed as instructors for the Artizan classes', that could be presented to the Royal Commission. Wright argues that men with both practical skills and theoretical knowledge were very scarce, 'and will be for the next 8 or 10 years, that is until men are trained for the special work'. States that in his opinion artisan pupils had poor elementary education and were not capable of higher level knowledge in theoretical science subjects: 'until the education act compels children to remain at school till they have passed the upper standards this difficulty will remain'.
