File is comprised of the audiovisual recording "Car Sick", an episode of the series Open Space produced by the BBC and aired on BBC Two. Originally aired as series 22 episode 0 on 23 February 1994. The recording was filmed in collaboration with Transport 2000 (now Campaign for Better Transport) and stars Michael Palin, then-Chair of Transport 2000; Stephen Joseph, then-Director of Transport 2000; John Whitelegg, then-Director of Transport 2000 International; Councillor Dave Merrett of York City Council; John Rigby of York City Council; Tony Young, a Transportation Engineering Consultant; Darian Goodwin of Mid Glamorgan County Council; Ken Sutherland of Railway Development Society; Edward Tyrer of Leicester City Council; Leen Verbeek of Houten City Council; George Gandy of Glyme Action Group; and various civilians.
Audiovisual contents depict Palin in a car in traffic in London, cars traveling over Tower Bridge in London, Whitelegg speaking in the back of a car driving through London at night, Palin at a London petrol station, Rigby and Merrett on streets in York city centre including Petergate and Gillygate, Young on the Metrolink and in an office; Goodwin on a South Wales rail service, Sutherland below the Dornoch Firth road bridge; Tyrer overlooking Leicester, Verbeek riding a bicycle, Gandy at home, Palin in an outdoor car park, Joseph in front of a screen and burned car, and Palin in front of a car with the hood open.
Recording presents the work of Transport 2000 to deliver accessible, fair, environmentally sustainable public transport and integrated transport systems in the United Kingdom. The recording addresses conditions for commuters in London, York, Manchester, South Wales, Scottish Highlands, Leicester, the Netherlands, and Woodstock, examining each city's relationship to cars and drivers. Includes information on the impact of ring roads and car travel to public health, air quality, access to work, school, and leisure activities, shopping and economics, and other social and environmental factors; function of the Metrolink in Manchester; benefits of retaining reduced access to York city centre to cars; government investment in public transport; bus deregulation since 1985; road congestion; competition between road schemes and rail track and signalling in South Wales; the SuperSprinter (snail) line connecting Orkney and Skegness; development of consultation schemes; traffic calming; integrated transport system and government investment in the Netherlands (Rotterdam); road bypass in Woodstock near Oxford; pedestrian safety; and other topics.
Identical recordings are stored on one CD-R disc and one VHS cassette tape. The file stored on the CD-R carrier has been digitised from the VHS tape recording.
