This series highlights the way in which the project was presented to the public to win popular support and gain funding through subscription. It also documents the previous unsuccessful attempt to build a canal from the South Durham coalfields to Darlington and Stockton-on-Tees in the 1760s, and how the new project built on the foundations of the earlier proposal to build a canal.
