Attempts to build a canal between Stockton to [Bishop] Auckland had first been pursued in the 1760s, but the scheme did not progress due to lack of funds. The project seems have to been revived around 1818 and 1819. The competition between the two proposals is indicative of the transition from canals to railways as the preferred mode of inland transport.
