Letter from John Rennie, London to Leonard Raisbeck, Stockton-upon-Tees
Rennie finally responded to Raisbeck, informing him by way of mitigation that he had been employed on a project in Portsmouth and had not received his post. He agrees to provide Raisbeck with costings for a railway line, but cautions him that ‘as no survey was made for the express object of a Railway what I can say will be more of a guess than any thing else – as a railway would require to be made on a very different line from a Canal that guess will I trust have to be sufficient to enable the committee to form a tolerable correct opinion which of the solutions it will be most for their interest to adopt.’

Dear Sir
I received your letter of the 2nd on my return to London last evening after a fortnights absence.
Your letter of the 12th of October cam to London when I was engaged in the Dockyard at Portsmouth & having gone here thence to Milford Haven where Government are now constructing a new Dockyard The letter got mislaid & unfortunately escaped my attention. I shall however take an early opportunity of attending to it & writing to you on the subject. But as no survey was made for the (illegible) object of a Railway what I can say will be more of a guess than any thing else – as a railway would require to be made on a very different line from a Canal that guess will I [illegible] however be sufficient to enable the County to form a tolerable (illegible)
