Letter from John Rennie, London to Leonard Raisbeck, Stockton-upon-Tees

Dear Sir
Having been absent from London on a very long journey I had not the pleasure to receive yours of the 25th untill within a few days.
The charge I make for such assistants as are Capable of making a Survey of the kind required by your Committee is £1.11.6 a day inclusive of Travelling & Living expenses. The travelling from this place to Stockton & back again is known to yourself the Living expenses may be from 10/6 to 12/- a day besides this there will be the Chain drawers & Staff holders which are usually procured on the Spott. The time of making the Survey depends so much on the weather & Difficulties of the ground that it is not possible to make a correct estimate.
There is two persons who I frequently

employ indeed I may say almost entirely when I Cannot Spare my assistants that are very Active & Skilfull in this Kind of business – both their charges are higher being £3.3 a day including their time & Living expenses when on the Surveys.
It is my Intention to go to Whitehaven to report in the Harbour there early in October. My Direct road would be through Catterick Bridge – that is the nearest I am likely to be to Stockton in the course of the present season – let me know if I shall be wanted that I may arrange my time accordingly.
