Jany 9th 1856 [struck through] 1857
Just returned from Ipswich after having been laid off work a month with a bilious attack & sort of low fever. Bought a homeopathic medicine chest & book. Last Sunday attended the funeral of Dan[ie]l [1] White of whom I learned mathematics for two or three years . Am reading Macaulay’s history of England vol 1st.
Jany 18. Have just begun to take in the Illustrated London News, the Chinese war having just broken out, also the Persian War. The Americans have now joined the English because the Chinese, by way
