It was almost as hard as a road, but the 4 furrow plough went thro’ pretty well[.] We next tried the subsoil plough _ this was almost too much for the engine _ which had to run at its work _
I made sketches at the works, for a new scheme of my own for switching away the rope-porters, instead of having boys to remove them _ it was simply a rod of iron fastened to, & joining the taut & slack ropes.
Warby and I between us have hit on a capital joint for the wire-rope it is thus

making a universal joint –
To-day I took a survey of the field we had operated upon, which was so hilly, & found the hollow was 27 ft deep
Fr[iday]. Xtmas day. I stayed at home and made a drawing of the field mentioned above, tracing ?? of which were distributed everywhere _
Afterwards went down to the works saw a model of Warbys’ [sic] to supersede Boydel[l], which he wanted me to perfect
Mary as usual made us presents, of pieces of her handy work all round & we gave her a workbox
