Jany 25th. The last 4 or 5 days I have been suffering from my former complaint, viz a sensation as though an acid perspiration were coming from my face, & surrounding my eyes. My tongue is whitish in the morning but afterwards becomes, I think, an unhealthy red, & has a pungent feeling, which extends also down to the stomach, so that I can feel that I have a stomach. When these symptoms are most violent my eyes feel to a degree, as if affected by the smoke arising from green wood put on a fire, & are irritable, & are relieved by closing.

Appetite good, sleep good but it is generally an hour or so, after getting into bed before I fall asleep. Great unwillingness to rise in the morning.

Yesterday I called in Mr Elliot [3] , the Homeopathic surgeon, & asked for some more of the pills, which he gave me on my first being attacked with this complaint about June 15th & which proved successful. He gave me some.

Have been visiting a great deal lately. Last Wednesday, read my paper on “Certain causes which affect the destinies of nations” before the P & Lit. Got through it very well. Several expressed themselves
