Heard from Oldknow that Charly Spoor recently gave a grand supper, at which Wright was present, & by & bye Charly opened his heart to Wright & said he knew Mr Head, his partner’s brother very well, but unfortunately they were not kind at present; he did wish Mr Wright would use his influence over Jerry Head to make them good friends again: he was sure he would do anything in his power to bring matters around, but what could you do with a fellow who would not smoke and would not drink. He said Jerry Head used to be a decent fellow, he was the first chap he knew when he went to the works

& the only one that knew his father. The principal objection he had to this said Jerry Head was that he “such a beggar to sweat.”

In the evening I attended the opening meeting of the P & Lit. Robert Watson was elected the new secretary. Tom Whitwell & Christian Read were proposed as new members. I am to read a paper in six weeks. All the members except Harry Mennel(,) afterwards adjourned, & had an oyster supper.

Oct 4th Sund[ay]. Dined at Robert Watson[’]s. On Friday there had been a party at Miss Brady’s at Sunderland. Miss Brady had said to Bob Watson, “How that it was too bad of him & Jerry Head(,) to
