nace; about a fortnight ago he wrote me a note down to the factory, asking if I could go up & look at their boiler. I answered the summons immediately, only to find him expressing his surprise that I had come up on purpose! By his wish then I took dimensions & arranged a plan to be carried out in a fortnight, I had previously offered my advice gratis, & I gave him the sketch.
We examined the apparatus already in, designed by David himself & found that it made the smoke worse.
He wanted me to guarantee that my plan would be suc-

cessful; this however I told him I would not do, as I did not know what obstructions &c might exist in the flues, &c But I said I had seen the same plan answer else where [sic] three times.
Well, this morning I asked him if he was going to set about the alterations tomorrow upon which he coolly told me he thought admitting air thro’ the fire door was better than my plan – Now, his own plans having failed before would, one would think make him distrust his own acquaintance with the subject but no – after sending for me & then wondering I came on
