purpose, accepting my offer to alter his furnace according to principles which I had seen in successful operation - and gratis! he coolly tells me he prefers his own [struck through] leaves me to conclude he has been troubling me merely to amuse himself & thinks an idea he has got into his head, will be more likely to be successful than my recommendations – for all he has failed once, and the subject is one I have studied professionally. This is a good specimen of the want of consideration among North country fellows, otherwise decent enough

This afternoon I went over to Sunderland, and after walking round the docks I went to the Dodshons’ – on the stairs was Mrs D carrying down a few cinders in a piece of paper, the third time the operation had been performed, as I afterwards learned, in anticipation of my advent – Fanny looked very well, & was in high spirits – Mrs D I fancy, wants to hook me for her.

Their attention was carried to the nth degree –

I rather like the old man – he has a good deal of dry wit about him - Teddy is an unco[outh?] lad –
