Note re ‘Majestic’ boiler.

Extract from Mr Fellow’s letter 23d
On examining the quantity of St Helens Coal consumed by the Majestic on an average voyage I find it exceeds Mesors Mandeslays estimate 12 Tons voyage.
The paragrah [sic] I have marked in the accompanying newspaper will I am sure give thee as it has me great concern.
I should be much obliged by thy thoughts in writing upon – The ventilation [?] of fumes as connected with Fine Damp & Choke Damp – The Causes – nature & Indications [?] – consequences - & remedies.
Use and abuse of Safety Lamps – Improvements – in construction. I feel bound to follow up my enquiry – Give me some particulars of the most melancholy and interesting causes which have come under thy own observation – should be a nice and useful employ for an evening hour to sit in thy Arm Chair and dictate to McKay [?] who I am sure would lend his aid to the Cause of humanity or one of thy clever daughters – a history [?] and dissertation – moral and scientific for my perusal – Are there any good Books or [?] on the subject
