Transcript of article [that also appeared in ‘the Times’] and letter replying to it. Article: ‘Patriarchal Engines in South Kensington ‘Puffing Billy’ and ‘the Rocket’. Letter: ‘Sanspareil’ was donated to the Museum by John Hick and not himself. Hackworth’s work on ‘Puffing Billy’. ‘It appears to have been overlooked that the defeat of the ‘Sanspareil’ was down to the failure of her cylinders supplied from the same [Robert Stephenson’s] factory’.
