Condolences on the death of Samuel Holmes, ‘he was a strong man both intellectually and physically’, he had sent F.F. Bainbridge his ‘foreword’ and it was also sent to Mr Ferens of Auckland and Mr Ferens of Hull, it ‘was a splendid thing for private circulation, but I am bound to admit that your criticism contained in one of your letters is extremely just & I am afraid that some of the phrasing is calculated to annoy rather than to convert’.
