Letter from Madame Flasschoux Michaux [Jane Young (nee Hackworth)]’s teacher, Vilvorde, Belgium to Jane Young (nee Hackworth)

Vilvorde 28. October 1852
My dear Jenny,

I have just received your letter of the 24th of this month in which I am surprised to learn that my letters of the 7th and 15th of this month have not reached you.

While acknowledging to your sister the receipt of the five letters she addressed to me last 30th August, I wrote to you at that time, my good friend, to express to you how much we sympathise with the terrible misfortune that has come to afflict you, and I enclosed a letter which I had received for you from England after you had left Vilvorde.

Here is the address on the envelope of my letter to your sister in which the two letters meant for you were contained:

I replied the next day to the second letter which reached me on the 14th October, thinking that my letter had arrived with her letter. How astonished I am today to learn that they have not arrived at their destinations.

Please ask you sister to take information on this subject to her local post office and to be good enough to let me know the result of the steps she has taken.

Your absence, believe me, my dear Jenny, has changed nothing in our affectionate feelings for you, and when we look around us and we see your old place unoccupied, we console ourselves with the thought that the place you have found in our hearts will always remain*.

My husband sends you his kind regards and my two children send you love and kisses (lit: their best kisses).

As for me, my dear Jenny, there remains for you all the love you know I have for you and I kiss you most affectionately.
