A comparison made of all the men setting forth their educational training (apprenticeship), their work in employment, their efforts, accomplishments, advancing experience, developments in their business inventions careers lives and find results.
This is the acid test.
I think you will find Tomlinson (1) knows nothing about analysis and any connections with the North Eastern RR would account for spite we were never heartily in accord. The early proprietors (Pease Family) were never cordial, we were friendly but not cordial & there was always rough feathers between us. Also with nearly all the RR systems. The London & NW never gave Tim Hackworth (2) a chance although he was at Crewe in the loco drawing office for years. The Loco Engineer will have advised him but all were jealous of & we were so independent we walked right over them. I am just the same, it is a family trait like invention.
I patented a welded ship in 1873 & read a paper before the Franklin Institute, May 8 1873. It was reproduced in their Proceedings. I made a model in copper and left it with the Institute. I have one or two copies which I took from the journal of the Franklin Institute. The Paper was on ‘The Construction of Iron Ships’. If you have a London Public Library you can see it.
I will give Mr. Bainbridge any information he may desire if he tells me what he wants I will attend to it.
We are going up into Canada in a month about 60 miles north west of Toronto. I shall see Albert Hackworth in Toronto where he has the ‘Worth Engineering Works’, Spadina Avenue, Toronto. He has a partner. They have been doing locomotive work for 2 or 3 years.
He has been here & we saw him in his works last year. I correspond with him & thought this would interest you.
