Letter and envelope from John Wesley Hackworth to Editor, Northern Evening Express

In envelope marked ‘J.W. Hackworth’s letter re the ‘Experiment’ etc’ letter begins with quote ‘the race is not always ‘to the swift and to the strong’ although the victor – before gaining his due – may often have to fight his battles over again – which is my present unenviable position, & I find- as did Martin Luther- ‘Falsehood dies hardy!’’ criticises Samuel Smiles, calls for him to answer his claims, details re ‘Experiment’. Editor of the ‘Engineer’ and George Graham have been putting forth ‘false statements’ Hedley did not invent the locomotive. It is believed that this item dates from after 1858.
