April 19th 1833 Reports made to the Stockton and Darlington Railway Commettee by John Graham

Gentlemen
I have seen Geo Longstaff and Elias Smith conserning there Goods being led by Engines ____ George Longstaff wont come to any reasonable Tearms he says unless the Company be responsable he wont allow the Engines to Hall his goods if they would hall them for nothing____
Elias Smith is quite aggreable to have his Goods taking by the Engines and will take the responability upon himselfe and allow the Company 0½d per Ton per Mile for all goods both assending and desending except

Lead upon this he only could give 0¼d per Ton per Mile for Hallage as the Price is worse for it than any other goods, they are only allowed 3/6d per score which is equal to 2/4d per Ton for Taking it between Darlington and Stockton
The Tonage for Lead is 1½ per ton per Mile 0¼ for Hallage would be 1¾ per ton and 1d for Wharfage ammount for 12 Miles 1/10d Leaving 6d per Ton for Loading and disloading and Traveling_____
All other Goods which are charged 1½ per ton per Mile are Charged 5/- for Bringing from Stockton to Darlington and delivering again 1½ per Ton and ½d Hallage equal 2d per Ton for 12 Miles and 1 Wharfage will be 2/1d per Ton Leaving for Portrage Loading and Disloading
