January 31st 1834; Reports made to the Stockton and Darlington Railway Commettee by John Graham
John Grahams Report of the probable saving which may accrue from the use of Loco: Engines in preference to Horse power as now imployed on the Middlesbro Line Taking the Last year as A date there has been Led to Middlesbro 84342 waggons @ 5½d per waggon which is the present Price now paid to Mathew Stephenson = £1932”16s”9d again 84342 waggons Containing 53 Cwt is equal to 223506¼ Ton @ 30 per Cent off a ¼d per Ton per Mile is equal to £651”17s”10½d allowing ⅛ of a penney per Ton per Mile for Repairs is equal to £465”12s”9d

which is equal to £1117”10s”7½d, Cost by Horses 1932”16”9 [underlined] Saving to Co £815”6”1½ per annum
And as it Reguards the present State of the Engines, They are in A middling fair condition yet the present Establishment has no chance to Lead the Coals to Middlesbro at all times, as we cant calculate upon having more than 10 Engines at work in the Coal Trade Exclusive of Coach Engines
J Graham Considers there ought to be from 12 to 14 Engines at work to do what will be required
The Owners of Deanery Colliery is done with all the Cos waggons except 25 they intend still to Keep
