April 25th 1834 Reports made to the Stockton and Darlington Railway Commettee by John Graham
Gentlemen
I beg leave to call your attention to the following dispute between John Graham and Henry Lenchester Engine man on Friday Last; Henry Lenchester & Wm Ridman came bothe up to Shildon together Lenchester 1st who had all Brusselton Bank waggons, and Ridman all the Boy Bank waggons; When this is the cace which frequently happens, The 2nd Engine gets Coals and water before the 1st Engine can get back from Brusselton and Loades away from the Branch before the 1st Engine; which Ridman did on Friday Last, Lenchester came down from Brusselton Bank

and set his Engine inbefore Ridmans and would not allow him to go away; I was present at the time and told Lenchester to Shift his Engine and allow Ridman to go away; he Refused to do so; I then told him if he did persist in stopping Ridman I would make him pay for it, Lenchester then told me I might do my worst and further said he cared as little for me as I did for him; I then ordered him to set his Engine by untill he came before the Commettee John Graham would advise the Commettee to give the above case a due consideration as it is of great importance, for if he has to have no control over the Enginemen it will be impossable for him to be answerable for the Leading, which will place the com-
